A chalazion/stye is a very common benign eyelid lesion caused by a blocked meibomian gland (specialized oil gland at the eyelid margin). In the initial phase, these bumps can be red and painful due to a sterile inflamation (chalazion). They can also become infected (stye), requiring antibiotics. They may self-resolve with medication and hot compresses or, in some cases, require surgical excision and drainage in the clinic.

This is a simple, quick procedure done in our clinic. It takes about 3-5 minutes. While the initial numbing injection may burn a bit, the procedure is otherwise relatively painless. You will receive either drops or ointment after the procedure and are usually advised to apply the medication for a week. Minor discomfort, foreign body sensation, and blood-tinged discharge are normal for the first 24 hours. It is also normal for the vision to be slightly blurred right after the procedure. Your eyelid may also be temporarily bruised and swollen, and this typically resolves after a few days.
