Myopia is a condition that occurs when the eye grows too long. Significant levels of myopia have notably higher risks of sight-threatening retinal conditions.
Progression of myopia can be slowed down or even halted in children or young adults thanks to advancements in optometric care. Our clinic has specialized equipment to measure the size and shape of your eye in addition to your refractive error, allowing our optometrist to customize your treatment. We offer a variety of treatments to help slow down the development of myopia.
Orthokeratology
Orthokeratology, or Ortho-K, is a treatment where customized rigid gas permeable lenses are worn overnight. These contact lenses reshape the cornea, the front surface of the eye, to allow for clear vision during the day. With proper handling, they are safe to use for children, and risk of eye infection is low if all safety and hygiene protocols are followed correctly.
MiSight
MiSight is a specialty soft multifocal contact lens by CooperVision that is the first FDA-approved soft contact lens for the treatment of myopia control in children aged 7-12. It allows for clear distance and near viewing during the day.
Low Dose Atropine
Atropine is typically formulated into an eye drop that is used to dilate the eyes. Studies have shown that off-label use of atropine in much lower concentrations than normal have proven to drastically slow down the growth of the eye, and thus the progression of myopia. The eyedrops are instilled nightly and can be used as a standalone treatment or as an adjunct therapy with contact lenses.
