Diabetic-related eye problems develop from high blood sugar levels, which can cause damage to blood vessels in the retina, resulting in bleeding and swelling of the retina in the back of the eye. Diabetes can also lead to early cataract development and severe glaucoma in advanced cases. Over 40 percent of patients diagnosed with diabetes develop some form of eye disease as a result of their disease. The risk of developing eye problems can be reduced with regular eye exams and by controlling blood sugar levels with a healthy diet and regular exercise. It is recommended that all patients with diabetes have a yearly eye exam.

Treatment of Diabetic Eye Conditions

Other than controlling blood pressure, blood cholesterol and the levels of blood sugar, treatment is usually not needed with mild diabetic retinopathy.  Treatment of more severe retinal problems may involve laser or injections.  Cataracts may be treated with cataract surgery.
