Patients usually begin to lose the ability to change focus from far to near in their early- to mid-40s. Bifocal or progressive eyeglasses allow patients to correct this problem and see clearly at far and near distances. More than one prescription is combined into a single lens of the eyeglass.

Bifocals

Bifocal lenses contain two powers separated by a clear line where the top of the lens is distance-only and the bottom portion is reading-only.  The main downside with bifocals is the lack of intermediate vision and the “image jump” that happens when your eyes cross the separation line.

Progressives

Progressive glasses do not contain a separation line, and the power add happens gradually from top to bottom.  This allows focus to gradually adjust from far to near as you look down through the lens, providing great far, intermediate, and near vision.
